MASHGH’E SEPID

In the Iranian tradition, calligraphy is a realm in which the letter comes into being; a space where language moves beyond its everyday function and reveals itself as image. Through their elongations, curves, and inherent rhythms, Persian letters generate a world of visual relationships that are seen before they are read. Calligraphic painting is a continuation of this possibility: a moment in which the letter crosses the boundaries of meaning and stands in space as an autonomous presence. Within this horizon, the line is not merely a sign, but an event of appearance the very opening that Heidegger describes as the clearing in which Being comes into unconcealment.

Our time is one of standing amidst transformation. Contemporary Iranian society, within the realm of shared experience, has transformed suffering into awareness and waiting into a horizon. In such a condition, hope acquires an inward quality; a presence that emerges through companionship, dialogue, and perseverance. Each presence renders the meaning of other presences more visible, and each voice, alongside other voices, creates the possibility of an opening. Light, in this sense, is a collective quality something that comes into being through being together.

MASHGH’E SEPID is the seventh chapter of the Selected project, a narrative that, after four years, returns once again to calligraphic painting. In the history of Persian calligraphy, Siah Mashq the practice of black calligraphic repetition has been a realm of repetition, discipline, and continuity; a space in which the letter, through repetition, draws closer to its essence. Dominated by whiteness, the works in this exhibition reread this tradition from another horizon: whiteness as a field of appearance, and repetition as a way of remaining and carrying on. Each letter, every trace of the brush, and every extension of the line bears the mark of a movement that follows its path toward light, bringing the possibility of the future into the present.
